"Standing Guard"

March 3, 2015 -- One of my favorite places to go in Denver is the Rocky Mountain Arsenal. It is quiet and off the beaten path of visitors. There is a rich history behind the refuge from early settlers, to displacement for a war, German Prisoners of War, and now a wildlife refuge. The secret to a shot like this is patience. Many times I will go to a part of the refuge and just wait. Sometimes an hour or two, or more. The chances of a "drive-by" shot like this are just about impossible. Rocky Mountain Arsenal

April 20, 2014 -- The wildlife refuge at the Arsenal has (or did) about 80+ bison that roam "the range." This morning I found this bull and spent just over an hour and a half with him. He was off by himself from the rest of the herd. He didn't seem to mind my company, nor the other people who stopped, took a picture, then moved on.

With the background blowout a bit from the bright sun and snow making it feel as cold as it was, the reflection in their eyes makes this image come alive. November 12, 2013 -- A Bison wanders by at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal Wildlife Refuge. Wildlife photography is much like sitting in the bushes of your backyard and waiting for the grass to grow. This image took about an hour to capture waiting for him to finish rubbing himself against a pole and then deciding to check me out. Much of capturing an image like this is luck. Bison are not that cooperative in taking posing suggestions. Camera stuff: Canon 5D Mk II with 70-200mm f/2.8 USM lens. Post in Aperture 3.

Run Rabbit Run

March 18, 2014 -- We have rabbits in and around our property. This guy did not mind a human splayed out on the front yard crawling around with this big glass looking eye--or maybe he did. The neighbors looked out their front window and thought that I had a heart attack. Cars would slow down and stare--who is this guy with the hare. It all doesn't matter, because the image is something you do not see looking out the window--or even from the porch. The expression is priceless and the reflection of the larger in the eyes brings depth and life. Watership Down becomes real and possible.
