"Everything I need, but a thought, idea, theme, rant. To get there it takes a step, word, or phrase in any direction. Something will happen and bloom. Let go and have faith. Be brave. Be vulnerable."

Washington National during the snow storm of January 26, 2011. They closed the airport indefinitely right after I took this shot. At one point the window was completely covered in snow.

The Staging Area
The Dulles Flier staging area at Dulles International Airport. There are over seven hundred cabs that service this airport. Who would have guessed that I would have gotten the same driver on two trips home over the course of six months.

"Unconditional Love"
June 10, 2015 —
It was seven years ago today that I rescued a one-year-old labrador retriever from a shelter in northern Virginia.
She was picked up as a stray near Clifton, Virginia and was in pretty bad shape—severe skin disorder and emaciated. The shelter held her back for five weeks before putting her up for adoption in an effort to put some weight on and get her healthy. The sign on the kennel said “severe skin disorder, requires lifelong medication.”
That one sentence turned away many potential families. Many people were excited to see a pure-bred yellow lab, but they moved on—quickly.
When we met, we instantly connected. We looked into each other’s eyes and knew it was right. I made the decision that she was worth whatever the cost—whatever the expense. She would get the best care I could find.
We have had seven great years together and I cannot imagine our lives without her.
I found these words by Josh Billings: “A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself.”
How true this is—and sad because there are too many humans who lack the capacity return the love that a dog brings. Some humans just want company when a dog truly needs companionship. In return, a dog will never let you down.
The skin disorder—cleared up shortly after she arrived home with me.

Fish Tacos at Wahoos in Denver
Food pictures used to turn me off. My initial reaction was "who cares what you ate for lunch."
When you take a step back, there is an art that exists on the plate--a Picasso-like feel. The potential of a deeper meaning before it becomes lunch.
Nothing turns on people more than good food--food that looks good to the eye, then tastes good. It is truly the sharing of the heart of the chef.Main Terminal

Sunset Moods
Denver restaurant as the sun set on the Rockies. I adjusted this a bit in Aperture by warming it up a bit (6500K), then dropped the exposure by 2. Beyond the blownout intensity of the sun (which looks like a nuclear explosion), there are very subtle moods and outlines I like in this image.

Run Rabbit Run
March 18, 2014 -- We have rabbits in and around our property. This guy did not mind a human splayed out on the front yard crawling around with this big glass looking eye--or maybe he did. The neighbors looked out their front window and thought that I had a heart attack. Cars would slow down and stare--who is this guy with the hare. It all doesn't matter, because the image is something you do not see looking out the window--or even from the porch. The expression is priceless and the reflection of the larger in the eyes brings depth and life. Watership Down becomes real and possible.

Icy Reflection
February 22, 2013 -- On my way out of Starbucks after a morning of writing, I found this: a billboard reflected in a melted pool of snow and ice. This image reminds me of two adages: the best camera (in this case an iPhone 4S) is the one with you, and if you see it--shoot it.
As with the previous image, you can never go wrong framing a shot in a reflection (of really anything).

April 2, 3013 -- The morning light shines through the blinds on a couple of lilies from my Fairfax garden.
The natural shapes of the lilies contrasted against the horizontal lines of the blind, with the slight blue sky at the top makes this shot for me.

Flora (the word used when you can't remember the name)
September 20, 2013 -- I love macro photography because it brings out an abstract beauty that you don't normally see.
To illuminate the interior of the flower, I used a portable led work light to with a 1/4 CTO Gel to warm the light a bit.

February 27, 2013 -- Urban Street Art has transformed this abandoned business and warehouse into an eclectic art gallery.
Everything now wears the mark of an unrealized artist: the building, sign, sign post, abandoned tire, and even the curb.
